Blue and Gold Banquet

Last night was Garrett's Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scouts. This pack has the tradition of having he boys bring a birthday cake to celebrate the birthday of Scouts and in the past we have had a lot of fun making his cake (that's not to say we didn't this year). Last year we made a dirt bike cake and his first year we made a campfire cake. Both cakes needed Mommy help to get them looking the way he wanted, but he did the batter and frosting and choosing everything to put on top and where to put it, and we had fun working together.

This year's theme was 'resourcefulness' and they asked the boys to make their cakes alone (except for with parental supervision for ovens and knives and such). We had a surplus of Little Debbie snacks that his uncle had given us, so he decided to be resourceful and use them to make his cake! He wanted either a train or a house, and this was the final outcome:


I helped brain storm with him what he wanted, but he cut the wheels from the brownie cakes and glued the wheels and stuff on with frosting. It came out an odd, cute little train cake! Each boy got an award for his cake, and Garrett was awarded the 'Most Creative Cake.'



At the beginning of pack meeting, Garrett was asked to lead the flag ceremony, and since he had done it for a friend's Court of Honor, he had the whole thing memorized. It's weird to see him leading things and acting like the older of the cub scouts... he still seems so young to me. But he did it flawlessly and I as so proud of him! Even with his laryngitis voice, he did a great job! (Do you see what is hanging from his belt? His own little pocket knife that he can only wear when he is his uniform! It was our compromise since he had worked so hard to earn his whittling chip, now he can wear it under certain conditions! He made the little leather holster and everything!)

This month he earned two more silver arrow heads for his Bear, his Outdoor Activity pin to go on the badge he earned last year, and the last of the five Fun for the Family pins.
Since it was their banquet, they had a baked potato bar for dinner, and then the boys got to eat the cakes after they had been judged. We sat next to our good friends, the Youngs, and their cub (whose name is also Garrett) and our Garrett were being silly pals all night long!

At the end of the night, this was what was left of his train cake, and since I had vowed not to take any Little Debbie snacks back home with me, it met with an unfortunate demise when its track slide off the tray and into the trash can ;-)
Scott came home from work early and stopped by the church to pick up the two little boys from me and that let me sit and relax and enjoy the evening. It was another fun pack meeting for everyone, and Garrett did his usual by staying late to help clean up and vacuuming the whole hall. He will opening tell whoever is cleaning, that he should be doing it rather than them, because it is a scout's duty to always be helpful. I love how he takes this scouting thing so seriously!
