Birdies Beware

Last Saturday the two older kids and I took a fieldtrip by ourselves while Scott took the three little boys to go help a single mom in our ward move. She has teenage daughters, and he enlisted their help to watch our littles for him while he muscled furniture in and out of houses.

He had signed the two older kids up for a shotgun clinic 2 hours away from the house, where they got to learn about gun safety and then got to try their hand at shooting clay pigeons.

Garrett has shot BB guns with Dad and Grandpa and also at cub scout day camp, so he knew a little about what he was doing; but Teagan was a serious first timer. So she listened intently!

They each got to shoot about 6 rounds. The first round was stationary pigeons that were placed on the ground...much like the shooting game we play at Cabella's whenever we go. (By the way, did you know that if you have kids and you go to the gun counter at Cabella's, they will give you free tokens to go upstairs and play a few round of the shooting game? Sometimes you have to ask for them, but they will give each kid anywhere from 4-15 tokens. It's good to know cool stuff like that!)

After that, the pigeons were flying!

Garrett hit 4 stationary pigeons and then 2 of the flying ones; while Teagan was only able to nick 3 of the flyers.

Even though their statistics weren't that great, they both had a fun time. And it was dry the whole time they were shooting - which was great because the forecast predicted 60% chance of rain. As soon as we got them their free lunch for the clinic, the clouds opened up and dropped chilly rain on all the teams who were on other fields during competitions.

Those valiant competitors stuck through the downpour and kept shooting their targets despite the rain in their eyes while the kids and I ate our sandwiches under a canopy and then hightailed it to our car to head home.

It's good that the kids are learning gun safety and how to handle them properly. And btw, I LOVE Teagan's hair!! So stylish!
