Camping Cut Short

This weekend was supposed to be a perfect weekend for us...supposed to. We left Friday morning and headed to a beautiful campground out near Manti. It had it all... Beautiful skies, white and fluffy clouds, mountains, trees, water, sand, mud (for the kids, of course, not for the adults), wind, and sunshine.

The kids had a wonderful time playing on the shore all day long while we set up the trailer and got things ready for the night. The reservoir was teeming with little fish around the shoreline - a good sign that there were bigger ones in the middle! Scott spent much of the day with the kids casting out their lines, hoping for a big catch. The kids had fun hand catching the little ones and then releasing them again. Some were little minnow sized, while others got to about 5-6" big! Not big enough to do anything with, but enough to make them proud. The kids also loved the head of the reservoir where the mud was that bubble gum, sticky, take-your-shoes-off type of mud. we got to see all sorts of animal tracks in it, and they made lots of tracks of their own!But the fun was yet to come....

We should have seen it coming because before we left the house Emmy was like this...And by the time we got to our site, he was like this... his fever had kicked in and was on the rise. It was 97 degrees outside his little body and well over 100 on the inside.

All evening it kept rising, but he kept trooping through it. A roasted marshmallow can cure a lot.And Tiggy made sure he was well taken care of and safe. With plenty of kisses...

and plenty of hugs in return! And as night fell, the fun got even better. After playing out on the water all day, Owen came in for dinner crying about a migraine starting. And before we knew it, he was screaming and crying and in so much pain that it was almost unbearable to watch for the rest of the family.

I gave him some Tylenol, but it didn't even touch it. We tried ice packs, wash cloths, head massages, back massages, singing, telling stories, pressure points, you name it, we tried it. I even gave him some benadryl in the hopes that it would make him sleepy and force him to sleep it off. After an hour of tears and pain, he finally surrendered to the benadryl, and with the help of a stuffed doggy covering his eyes and taking away the pain. So while Owen slept soundly in the camper, the rest of us enjoyed roasting marshmallows and playing around the camp fire.

And when it was finally bed time, our fun meter spiked.... along with Emmy's fever. Even though the camper got down to 50 degrees, his fever stayed up around 104-105 all night long. He was restless and uncomfortable and wanted to nurse ALL NIGHT LONG! He kept cling to me and saying "Mommy...Ouch....Mommy...." and no amount of singing or rubbing could help the poor little dude. So I got about 15 minutes of sleep throughout the night... Saturday morning finally came and we let the kids play some more by the water and Scott let me sleep for about an hour or so while he took the kids for a walk around the reservoir (which was terrible on his broken ankle, because he refused to wear his brace camping and only had a little wrap on it and walking in the sticky mud was really hard on him). Owen had woken up feeling better, and since the only thing I could attribute his migraine to was the sun, he made sure to keep a hat on all day long to help keep the sun out of his eyes. But Emmy kept on roasting and being miserable. So after lunch we packed up and headed home. We stopped at another park to let the kids roast bratwursts over a fire, came home and dumped the trailer yuckies at a KOA site, and then came home to our air conditioned home where I could give Emmy baby Advil to keep his fever at bay so we could both sleep through the night.
So this morning I drew the unlucky straw of staying at home instead of going to church. Emmy's first day in nursery will have to be postponed until next week when his fever is gone. His fever is down, but he was still pretty out of it for most of the day and just wanted to lie around or be held.

We should still be camping. We had planned to stay until Monday, but I'm glad to be home. It's easier to be sick in a place you know, and it's easier to take care of sick ones in a place with everything you need. Maybe our next camping trip will be less eventful!

Poor Emmy! I hope he's feeling better! What caused his fever?

You're a great mom Kris...the kids are very lucky to have you. As a side note, I loved the photos you took and picked to go with the blog.
